Our mission is to bring art to the widest audience through exhibiting in diverse spaces to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
Curate.A.Space specializes in a variety of arts-related services to meet a broad spectrum of client needs. These include exhibitions and exhibition support for art and history projects, as well as offering workshops on professional practice for artists and curators.
We organize all aspects of solo and group exhibitions of art for museums, university galleries, non-profit g, corporations, and other institutions. We also develop educational publications and programs to complement these exhibitions.
The consultancy also assists institutions in aspects of exhibition support such as designing and producing labels, catalogues and organizing publicity.
One of the core functions of Curate.A.Space is to curate exhibitions in different spaces. We are extending the idea of "the white cube" as being the only venue for exhibitions.
The content of our exhibitions often determines the space. for example, in the exhibition for the Ifa Lethu Foundation, we opened the exhibition in the men's prison at Constitution hill. This is a historic building which has been left as it was as when people we imprisoned for their political views, among other things. The Ifa Lethu collection repatriates artworks by artists marginalized by the South African art community. The works often spoke of the injustices during apartheid and the venue at Constitution Hill gave weight to their work.
Selecting the appropriate spaces which to make an exhibition more meaningful is part of our mission.
“Curating is 20% flair and imagination and 80% administration, collaboration and management. You need to be able to think ahead and see around corners. You cannot take a successful exhibition without the 20% but you can ruin a great idea if you cannot bring an exhibition together.” – Nicholas Serota (Former Director, Tate, London)
